Nurturing Nature with Botanist and Greenerds

As a plant enthusiast, I was excited to create my first nursery e-commerce website as part of General Assembly's project. A year later, I had another chance to create an app called Botanist for a hackathon challenge at Bonsey Jaden with my teammates.

48 hours to tackle the brief

Within 48 hours in a team of five, we needed to come up with a solution based on the brief given. With the rising trend of AI and Bonsey Jaden gaining new partnership with CUE Group, the agency wanted to leverage on expanding ideas using not only AI but also the Video AI engine as a baseline. The Video AI Engine is an advanced video intelligence system that can map out and analyze visual specifications from videos, not just static images. Visual AI engines have revolutionized the way we shop, create, and curate content, and they are about to change the way we search our videos too. Having this engine at our disposal, what possibilities does it unlock for us?

Using an AI search engine, we aim to help users identify plants and detect plant problems. The search engine will display relevant video results, providing valuable information on plant care and troubleshooting techniques. Additionally, the AI system will offer personalized recommendations on related products that can enhance the users' gardening experience.

The Solution

It started from our own experience as plant hobbyists. Often, when we tended to our plants, we encountered problems such as insects and diseases, and we were unsure about the correct way to care for them. We even found unidentified plants that we unknowingly grew.

The Challenge

  • Subscription model features: consult with the expert, unlimited plant profiles, AI search engine (free for first 30 days trial)

  • Retail/E-commerce, promoting products related to the plants

  • Business-to-business, partnership with sellers to promote their events and products

The Monetization

Considering our limited timeframe and the fact that we have just two designers dedicated to this project, our primary objective was to emphasize the functionality of the concept while preserving the integrity of its visual aesthetics. Furthermore, we delved into potential applications of this idea in various industries, including skincare and beauty, as well as agriculture and farming, with an eye toward future expansion.

Learnings and Future Considerations

– Denise Law (Tumbleweed founder)

“More than at any time in our past, we are living in big towns and cities and often in confined living spaces, spending work and leisure time in the digital world, without much connection to the natural world that we’re inherently part of. Being around plants is a kind of antidote to our busy, urban, digital lives.”

The Challenge

Creating an e-commerce site to support a local gardening store

*Source: CNA

Last year’s COVID hit our sales as we weren’t able to open our shop. A lot of our consumers has no access to greenery too since they are locked down. After the circuit breaker more people start picking up gardening as a way to relieve stress*

Through User and Market Research, we arrived at our key learnings

Some untapped potential consumers don’t use e-commerce when they want to shop for plants/ gardening

There is a lack of educational information on plant care online

The motivation behind their purchase and their behaviours, such as lifestyle, environment, recipients, delivery method, etc

User Personas

Who are we designing it for?

Rookie Plant Hobbyist

Jessica needs a way to easily discover and purchase a plant online because she wants to get the right plant for her lifestyle.

The Loving Husband

Michael needs a way to easily discover and purchase a gift online for her wife because she is a plant lover.

Solutions

By utilizing personalization through a quiz, we can guide users in making informed buying choices.

The video demonstrates how consumers can check out the section/ sub navigation called “Take a Quiz” to show the best plant matches for them by answering sets of questions to purchase plants.

This video demonstrates how consumers can customise their gift options before adding the item to the cart/ checkout.

Play around with the demo prototype below

The project could use few more wireframes and detailed demonstrations to navigate to other pages with prototyping. Through usability testing, I found out it would be good to have actual photos of the plant itself (inventory) as well, due to the uniqueness of each plant.
